JEE Main without Coaching: JEE Main is one of the most competitive engineering exams which ensure the admission of aspirants to the most renowned institutions like IIT’s and the NIT’s, IIIT’s and other government colleges. Even many of brilliant students studying in top schools of big cities have also joined various coaching institutes. We also see that after the result of any exam newspapers, television and social media are filled with advertisements of countless institutes having the recommendation from toppers. So, other aspirants which are preparing for the exam feel fear of missing out. Then they also join coaching classes and have to pay lakhs of money.
There is a myth that it is the only way to get through. But this is not verifiable. Statistics show that overall India, around 55% of those who preferred self-study cracked the exam while who had taken coaching were 45%. Moreover, students residing in rural, backward or remote area also had secured a very good rank in JEE Mains without coaching. It is prominent to note that coaching is not the only deciding factor for success in any exam. Many students headed towards big cities for joining extravagant coaching institutes also faced failure. There is one major drawback that students have to study under high pressure, they have to drop schools, sometimes they pay less attention to their board exams and cannot even reach the minimum eligibility percentile. Remember, only competitive environment is needed not the pressure.
Now, the answer of the most thorny question that is it possible to crack IIT JEE Main without coaching is definitely yes. But for that, you have to study thoroughly and good. Here are some tips for those students who want to crack this exam without coaching:
- First of all, get an early start.
It is widely accepted that the best way to approach this exam is early preparation. You will need more time to understand the concepts and practice the questions. You cannot survive off last days studying as you may not be able to cope up with pressure and gradually may not able to score much. So, it is advisable that give yourself enough time to prepare and plan well in advance. Then organize your study accordingly.
- Understand the pattern of JEE Main exam
JEE Main entrance exam is quite different from board exams. You can not clear it by cramming the concepts. This exam is drafted in a way to check the fundamental skills of understanding, reasoning and analyzing. NTE has released the exam pattern, you can check it out from there. In brief, it is a computer-based three hours exam which contains objective type questions, 30 each from physics, chemistry and mathematics i.e., a total of 90. You will get 4 marks for each correct answer and there is a provision of one fourth negative marking for each incorrect attempt. Once you become familiar with it, it will reduce a lot of fright.
- Analyse the syllabus and weightage of topics
The syllabus of JEE main comprises more advanced topics than asked in board exams. You need to pay attention to it. There is more thing that some topics you have to cover for your boards are not included in this exam so those can be omitted. This will save a lot of time. So, make it clear what should be covered and what can be skipped.
Then make a list of chapters and topics in accordance of their weightage of all of three subjects. Give more time to those good sections in which you can score maximum. Also try to find out your strong subject/subjects and bring perfection in that. Make it remarkable that do not skip any subject considering that this is your weak subject. May be you are not comfortable with that subject but you can break this discomfort by understanding and a lot of practice.
- Select study material and books intelligently
You have to choose your study material and books very wisely to make your concepts crystal clear. For board exams we know NCERT books are enough but for JEE mains you need to read more advanced books. Firstly, read the NCERT books thoroughly to make a strong baseline and then refer the advanced ones. For Physics, H.C Verma; D.C Pandey and Resnic Halliday are very good books. H.C Verma is recommendable, although you can refer good topics. For Chemistry, books by O.P Tandon, M.S Chauhan, J.D lee and R.C Mukherjee are preferable. For Mathematics, one can refer to books written by R.D Sharma, M.L Khanna, S.L Loney, and Hall and Knight. The books are just suggestions, you can also go ahead for other good one’s also.
Also, make notes of important things in your own language. During the last days, you will not have time to go through the books. So, you can revise swiftly from your notes. Go over the formulae and try to memorize them.
- Organize your time
Time management is a very important thing for such a competitive exam. You can also make a timetable. A well-constructed timetable will surely help you to achieve your goal. Further, decide your tasks and priorities and then try to complete the most important one first. Set a time limit precisely in which you have to complete the task. Most important, abolish the inessentials.
- Follow a set up
It is underlying that just making a time table will not do anything but you should follow your set up factually. If you follow this regularly, your willpower and confidence will be boosted up.
- Practice by mock tests and previous years papers
There is a famous quote, “Practice makes a man perfect.” This is one awesome. So, one should practice a lot. Taking various mock tests, solving practice papers and most important previous years question papers are the best ways to practice for this exam. Such tests increase your question-solving abilities. This will also help in gaining more speed, further, you will have an idea to approximate time for the different type of questions. Coaching institutes are mostly joined to get indulged in test series and other mock tests. But as you have internet now, you can get anything by sitting at home.
Practice more and more, usually, your confidence will be raised up plus you will get to know your mistakes. After correction yo,ur performance will be elevated. Try to give full-powered tests before appearing for the actual exam so that you can feel the exam environment. This will help you to reduce the nervousness in the real exam.
- Revision
It is said that, to revise is to see again. It is taken as must do before exams because memory stagnates with the passage of time. Thus for recalling what you have learnt throughout years, revision is extremely important. At last, you need to get daily motivation. So, stay positive and prepare without the fear of failure. Because success is about consistency. Consistent hard work leads to success.
